I am analyzing my second school magazine cover, I am doing this so that I can get a feel for the different types of features that are included in magazines so that I will have more of a grasp on how to create my own when the time comes!
This school magazine is called 'Fly', It is probably called this to make the students feel like they can 'fly' if they work hard enough at school. The significant words that stand out are 'Fly' and possibly 'Aim high and believe you can fly' , these words stand out to draw the reader in and make them want to see what is inside the magazine. The particular connotation on this cover is that there is a picture of a school in the background and a happy student on the front cover, this is because the school wants to make themselves look as if their student's happiness is most important.
A School publishes the magazine and gives it away for free to their students, this is the only magazine that they publish. It doesn't really have any media interests other than the fact that it wants to promote the school and the students. The magazine is published once a month for students to take home with them. The main readership for this particular magazine is students and their parents or guardians, it is a great way for parents to see what's going on in school and get to know more about their child's education. There are no signs that this magazine has a website.
The main reader that this magazine is targeting is the student, I know this because there is a caption that reads 'How to re-leave pre-exam stress' for the students, making the magazine look interested in the student's well being.
The main image on the magazine is a blonde haired girl, looking ahead of her whilst smiling, possibly suggesting that she is happily looking into the future due to her great education with this school. She is wearing her own clothes suggesting that the school does not have their own uniform, making the magazine seem more casual and relaxed. This possibly suggests that the readers are pupils of the school who are also as casual and relaxed as the girl on the front cover. There is also a picture of the school in the background, automatically promoting the school.
Some particular items featured are '10 ways to customise your boring school uniform' and 'win £100 worth of revision books', and the main feature is 'How to releave exam stress', these are all features that will appeal to and interest students, making them want to pick up a copy of the magazine and read through it. The magazine's house style colours seem to be purple and black, the main image on the magazine is one of the school and a happy pupil standing infront of it looking ahead of her. The cover doesn't look simular to your normal magazine as there are no pictures of celebrities etc, however this magazine cover does resemble most school magazines.
The magazine's presentation comes accross as very casual and laid back due to the student standing infront of the school in her own clothes, also the grafetti style of writing on the magazine makes the magazine come accross as laid back and casual. The magazine is free of charge to students so there probably isn't a lot of money put into the making of the magazine. The magazine compares to other school magazines because it puts the students first in the way that other school magazines do by writing about things like exam stress, school uniforms and offering free prizes.
This magazine has an automatic effect on the reader due to it's presentation, it uses bright cloured fonts like yellow and light blue to automatically capture the reader's attention, it uses the word 'fly' as the masthead and it is written in big black letters, this is done so that the masthead will be the first things the reader sees whilst looking at the cover of the magazine. It uses a picture of the school with a happy student standing infront of it so that the school automatically seems like a happy environment for students!
The magazine addresses it's readers through phrases like 'aim high and believe you can fly', by using the pronoun 'you' it directly addresses the person reading the magazine and makes them feel involved in that particular part of the magazine.
The main thing that is advertised in this magazine is the school and the students who go to the school, making the school seem like a great place. The main representation in this magazine are the students, we can see this due to the student who is pictured in the centre of the front cover.
The magazine doesn't particularly have any competition as the magazine is only designed for students of the school and their parents, not for a wider audience.
The reason I think that this magazine is popular in the school is because the writer understands the students and that they don't like their uniforms and that they like to win free stuff etc. This magazine is great because it offers infromation on the school and how their main goal is to keep their students happy, this will settle the minds of parents of students.
