I am going to analyse a typical school magazine contents page, I am doing this so that when I am creating my own contents page I will have a better idea of what to include in it.
The particular thing that I noticed about this contents page is that they have a kind of 'running order' in where they place the stories, 1 to 28. They seem to put the most important articles at the top of the contents page and the least important towards the bottom.
The contents page tells the reader about each individual story in the magazine, It's main house style colors are purple and white.
This contents page is targeting readers such as parents and students, I know this because of articles like 'tell us what YOU think of the school food' , 'need revision help? Take our advice', these articles are directly aimed at students through rhetorical questions and the use of the word 'YOU'.
The main image on this particular contents page is a girl called Alicia Wyer, she has fair hair, tanned skin, a purple and white top and is also wearing jeans, she is smiling and the title above her image reads 'Alica Wyers... reveals all about the school play and tells us the backstage gossip' this is of vital interest to students in the school who enjoy drama and music and want to get the details on the play. This image makes Alicia seem important and recognized for her talents, this shows the school in a positive light as they are giving recognition to students for their talents and abilities. Another image that appears on the contents page is a picture of two 'top academic' students that have told the magazine all about their life in sixth form, the image gives the reader clues as to what the main story is about and will also interest younger students down the school who aspire to become sixth formers some day, enticing the to read the article.
The contents page does not look similar to other magazine contents page as this is a school magazine contents page and it also has it's own unique touch through the use of purple and white.
The main people being represented in the contents page are the students, they are represented academically, for being good at sports and also drama. This gives the school a diverse look showing that the editor has thought about more than one interest where students are concerned.
This magazine is given out to students for free by the school.
I think this contents page adds to the magazine's overall popularity as it includes all sorts of interesting stories such as 'Rugby boys win the national tournament', 'All of this weeks sports results', 'Head of music speaks out about house music night' and 'Article on our recycling campaign. Get involved!' This shows that the magazine editor has thought about different stories that will appeal to different readers increasing readership as there is something for everyone and readers can see this by simply just glancing through the contents page.
The contents page offers an orderly fashion of the stories from most importance to least importance and gives the reader a brief idea of what's inside the magazine, it gives the magazine an opportunity to interest the reader straight away and make them want to see what's inside.
